IT - Systems Management

I have always been a fast learner. I come from a mechanical background, having worked on cars and trucks all my life. When I graduated from high school, I decided I wanted to go to college. I looked into automotive mechanics but I wasn't going to make anymore money than I currently made working in a tire factory, plus I just worked on cars because I was good at it not because I liked it. But I have always liked working with my hands and solving problems people had. I looked into the NSCC calendar and found there was a Computer Service Technician course. This sounded good because I could be doing what I enjoyed, working with my hands and solving problems without having to work with huge rusty parts covered with mud and snow. But as I looked into it I found that it was specific to fixing the computer's parts rather then working with the computers. So I looked further and found Information Technology. It taught you some of database management, programming, website design and networking. This had enough that I felt like I could learn a lot.

I walked into the course with almost no prior computer knowledge. People were talking about things I've never heard about and using acronyms (OS, RAM, NT, XP, and LAN) like it was their first language. But throughout the course I learned quickly, and in no time I was up to speed with everyone else and continuing to learn. I found it more and more interesting. I would take everything I learned home and learn more about it. I developed strong interests in things like programming applications, database configuration and website maintenance. I started looking for outside sources to work on other people's computer problems and to turn my new found knowledge into a career. I learned a lot and had many experiences during my time studying.

With this new found education I found a passion. I want to take this education and continue into Computer Network Technology. With the advanced certification I hope to move back to the Annapolis Valley and develop a career as a Computer Network Technician.
